Today's Devotional Thought

1 John 2:18-29        Persevering Through the End Times

It seems that almost everyone is captivated by the end times, the antichrist, and what things will be like in the last days.  John brings his followers some very practical and clear advice on these matters.  We spent last week looking at this text, and we are going to continue that process this week.  If you missed last week’s devotions please go to www.missionsurge.com/blog and check out last week’s posts to catch up!  This is an important passage of Scripture.

Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have appeared; from this we know that it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they were not really of us; for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us; but they went out, so that it would be shown that they all are not of us. 20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know. 21 I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it, and because no lie is of the truth. 22 Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son. 23 Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father; the one who confesses the Son has the Father also. 24 As for you, let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father. 25 This is the promise which He Himself made to us: eternal life.

26 These things I have written to you concerning those who are trying to deceive you. 27 As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.

28 Now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at His coming. 29 If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone also who practices righteousness is born of Him.  1 John 2:18-29

There are 3 things that we saw last week that will well prepare us to live, not with fear, but securely and with joyful assurance in these last days.  Let’s take some time to briefly review those three things today and then focus the rest of our week on the last part of the outline.

We saw last week, that in order to be prepared to persevere through the end times we must first recognize the antichrists.  John wrote in verse 18, “Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have appeared; from this we know that it is the last hour.”  There are 3 characteristics of antichrists (plural).  First, they Depart.  Verse 19 tells us, “They went out from us, but they were not really of us; for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us; but they went out, so that it would be shown that they all are not of us.”  They not only depart, but they also Deceive.  Verse 20 and 21 say, “But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know. 21 I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it, and because no lie is of the truth.”  And in verse 26, “These things I have written to you concerning those who are trying to deceive you.”  Antichrists depart from the faith and the family of God.  They deceive.  They also Deny.  Verses 22 and 23 say, “Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son. 23 Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father; the one who confesses the Son has the Father also.”    Antichrists are characterized as denying truth, ultimately the truth of Jesus Christ.  Satanism in its purest form is to deny the need for Christ to come and die.

We saw also that in order to be prepared to persevere through the end times we must have the anointing.  John writes in verses 20 and 21, “But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know. 21 I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it, and because no lie is of the truth.”   He goes on in verse 27, “As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.”  The Holy one provides the anointing which produces knowledge of the truth.  Knowledge of the truth produces stability, soundness, and security from being deceived.  It is really the Spirit of God applying the truth of the Word of God to the Christian’s life in order to affect sanctification.  Paul wrote in 2 Thessalonians 2:13, “But we should always give thanks to God for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth.”

Finally, we saw that in order to be prepared to persevere through the end times we must abide.  We must recognize the antichrists. We must have the anointing.  And we must abide.  Look at how many times the word abide is used in verse 24-29.  “24 As for you, let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning.

29 If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone also who practices righteousness is born of Him.”

Look at how many times the word abide is used in this text.  If you want to be on guard against the antichrist, you need to abide!  Abide!  Abide!  It is absolutely essential that we learn to abide in Him!  We will spend the remainder of our week considering what it means to abide.  Until then…
