Today's Devotional Thought

Yesterday we saw the importance of recognizing the antichrists among us as we prepare ourselves to persevere through the end times.  Today we recognize the importance of having the anointing. John introduces this concept in verses 20-21.  “But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know. 21 I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it, and because no lie is of the truth.”  John also adds in verse 27, “As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.”   What is John referring to here?

First, we know this anointing comes from the Holy One.  The Holy One provides the anointing.  I believe the Holy One is referring to Jesus and the anointing is referring to the work of the Holy Spirit in us.  John tells us in his gospel, “These things I have spoken to you while abiding with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you”  John 14:25-26.  The anointing produces knowledge of the truth.  Knowledge of the truth produces stability, soundness, and security from being deceived.  How do Federal agents learn to recognize a counterfeit?  John Macarthur writes, “Federal agents don’t learn to spot counterfeit money by studying the counterfeits. They study genuine bills until they master the look of the real thing. Then when they see the bogus money they recognize it.”  We don’t need to work to try to identify the antichrist…or even the antichrists.  We need to study Christ and know Him more…He will give us an anointing that produces truth that will allow us to spot a counterfeit a mile away.  Do you have this anointing?  Maybe you are wondering?  Maybe you are fearful that you are missing something essential to your Christian life and perseverance.  I want you to consider what Paul writes in 2 Thessalonians 2:13, “But we should always give thanks to God for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth.”  The Holy Spirit takes the truth (Scripture) and sanctifies us in the midst of the lat days until we are finally and saved and in heaven.  Do you have the anointing?  When you open the pages of Scripture, does the Holy Spirit take those words, apply them to your life, and transform you and your trajectory through the Scriptures?  If so, the anointing is there!  Don’t take it for granted.  Open the Scriptures with the help of the Spirit and stay there until He speaks to you.  Then obey!  Get the truth in you and you will be prepared to persevere through the last days.

There is one more element John provides us as we seek to be prepared to persevere through the last days:  abiding.  We will flesh this concept out in more detail next week, but for now, I want you to take note of how many times the word abide is used in verse 24-29 alone:

As for you, let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father.  25 This is the promise which He Himself made to us: eternal life.

26 These things I have written to you concerning those who are trying to deceive you. 27 As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.

28 Now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at His coming. 29 If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone also who practices righteousness is born of Him.

If you want to be on guard against he antichrist, you need to abide!  Abide!  Abide!  It is absolutely essential that we learn to abide in Him!  We will work to do that next week!  Until then.

Please pray and share!
