Today's Devotional Thought

1 John 2:18-29        Persevering Through the End Times

It seems that almost everyone is captivated by the end times, the antichrist, and what things will be like in the last days. Movies, books, and sermon series on the end times and last days have seen great popularity over the last few decades.  And the more dramatic and emotionally charged they can make it, the better…at least for sales.

John brings his followers some very practical and clear advice on these matters in our text this morning.  He gives us insights that will be more beneficial to us than the entire Left Behind book series.  His words are more beneficial than the myriad of emotionally charged, overly dramatized Christian movies.  The message he brings is not meant to instill fear and panic in the people of God.  It is meant to initiate change, provide security, and produce fruit…and it will…. if we will just apply it.  Consider his message in 1 John 2:18-29:

Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have appeared; from this we know that it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they were not really of us; for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us; but they went out, so that it would be shown that they all are not of us. 20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know. 21 I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it, and because no lie is of the truth. 22 Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son. 23 Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father; the one who confesses the Son has the Father also. 24 As for you, let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father.  25 This is the promise which He Himself made to us: eternal life.

26 These things I have written to you concerning those who are trying to deceive you. 27 As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.

28 Now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at His coming. 29 If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone also who practices righteousness is born of Him.

There are 3 things that we are going to see over the next two weeks that will well prepare us to live , not with fear!, but securely and with joyful assurance in these last days.

I.  Antichrists    v18-23

The term last hour is used only here in the bible.  Generally the end times are referred to as “the last days” or the “last time” and technically they began with the coming of Jesus and the gospel of the kingdom.  We are in the last days, and have been.  The last days, or last time is progressing towards the end of time and as we are progressing, the writers of the New Testament give us insights on what to expect.  Jude 17-19 says, “But you, beloved, ought to remember the words that were spoken beforehand by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, 18 that they were saying to you, “In the last time there will be mockers, following after their own ungodly lusts.” 19 These are the ones who cause divisions, worldly-minded, devoid of the Spirit.  The last day’s or the last time will be characterized by mockers and scoffers.  This was already so serious that John says….this isn’t the last days.  It is the last hour!  It is the last hour…and how do we know?  Antichrists have come.

We like to talk about the antichrist.  During the reformation, the Catholic Pope was identified as the antichrist by most protestants.  During WWII Hitler was accused of being the antichrist along with  Mussolini, and Stalin.  I heard during the 90’s that it was Saddam Hussein and more recently there were videos circulating explaining why President Obama was the antichrist.  Please notice that John doesn’t try to name THE antichrist…he deals with a more certain, pressing, and present issue…the antichrists (plural).  Moreso than needing to identify the antichrist (singular) who will appear one day that we do not know, it is much more important that we learn to recognize the antichrists who are here today.  And if we are prepared for the antichrists, we will also be prepared for the antichrist!

There are 3 characteristics of antichrists that will help us identify them.  We will see them tomorrow. Until then.....

Please pray and share!
