Please take a moment to lift us up to the Father today. Please take time to meditate on the sermon or devotion for today as well.
Please Pray for Us
Please take time to pray for us this week. As many of you know, we closed on our house in MS last Thursday. We closed on our house in TN yesterday. There is much to be done to the home before we are ready to move in. Please pray that the additions and renovations would go quickly and smoothly so that we can get moved in and settled. It feels like we have been in a holding pattern for the past several months in many ways. We are ready to get settled down and settled in so that we can devote more of our energy, time, and efforts towards ministry.
Please continue to pray for me that God would guard me and keep me from the world, the flesh, the devil, and His schemes. Pray that God would bless me and my walk before Him. Pray that I would be holy, above reproach, and that I would live a life of NO compromise in any area! Pray this for me as frequently as you will! And pray that God would pour out His Spirit, His anointing, His unction, and His power as I seek to proclaim His Word each week in multiple settings!!
Please pray for my marriage that God would strengthen it and bless it. Pray that God would watch over, protect, bless, encourage, and use Mandy. It is not easy job being a pastor's wife and a mother. She needs your prayers and your encouragement as often as the Lord brings her to mind.
Please pray for my family that God would put a hedge of protection around us. Pray that He would work in my children's life (Luke, Levi, Jude, Miriam, Silas, and Hadassah). Pray that He would give Mandy and I wisdom, leadership, and ability to raise them all in a way that would honor and glorify Him. Pray that God would bless and use our family!
WE COVET YOUR PRAYERS!!! Thank you so much for joining us in praying for the nations and for studying God's Word with us. Thank you for your financial support of this ministry, your prayer support, and your encouragement! You are a vital part of what God is doing.
Today's Devotional Thought
Today we conclude our study of 1 John 2:15-17. If you missed it, you can try to catch it on the Mission Surge blog at www.missionsurge.com/blog
IV. The Promise v17
Our text ends with a promise in verse 17. Listen to what John writes in verse 17, “The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.” It may seem like it is only warnings and threats of judgment, but that could not be farther from the truth! I am not telling you these things to be a kill-joy! No! No! No! I am telling you these things for your good…for your joy.
The world is passing away. This is why you should not love it or the things of it. Don’t be like the thorny soil Jesus described in the parable of the soils. It sprang up and looked promising, but the things of the world choked it and killed it. Love for the world pushed out love for God and resulted in no fruit. Luke 8:14 says, “And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. The world is passing away, but the one who does the will of God lives forever! This is wonderful, glorious, encouraging, hopeful, joy-filled news! As true Christ followers we stay far away from that which is passing away and find ourselves living forever instead and we find joy in it! Allowing love for God to push out love for the world is a joyful thing. Consider 1 John 5:3-4, “For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome. For whatever is born of God overcomes the world.” His commands are not burdensome to the believer. The world is not appealing to the Christ follower. And the things of the world hold no power over us. They are all passing away, but we who do God’s will will live forever! What about you?
