Today's Devotional Thought

Yesterday we saw Christ's equality with the Father.  Today we will see how He emptied Himself...and how He will one day be exalted by all!

We see His emptying in verses 7 and 8.  It reads, “but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”  He set aside His glory in heaven to be born in a manger in first century Bethlehem, to live in obedience to Mary, Joseph, and the law of God…His law.  And ultimately, He emptied Himself by being obedient to the point of death…even death on a cross.  This is the ultimate emptying!  Please please take time to read the following short article by Bryan Elliff called “Jesus Died a Hero” to illustrate Christ’s humility.

2 Corinthians 8:9 reminds us, “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich.”  Christ, equal with the Father for all eternity, truly emptied Himself to come and live among us, die among, and rise from the dead to save us.

The third thing we see in Philippians 2 is Christ’s exaltation.  With Luke 2 as our backdrop, let us not get so attached to the baby Jesus that we fail to remember that He is King Jesus!  We read in verses 9-11, “For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”  Isaiah prophesied in Isaiah 45:23, “I have sworn by Myself, The word has gone forth from My mouth in righteousness And will not turn back, That to Me every knee will bow, every tongue will swear allegiance.”   The magi came from afar to bow the knee before the king of the Jews.  Eventually all knees will bow and all tongues will confess.  We know that as we work to bring the gospel of the kingdom to the nations, that knees from every tongue and tribe and nation will freely and gladly bow.  Tongues from every nation, tongue and tribe will freely and gladly confess Jesus as their Lord.  Fast forward to Revelation 7:9-10:  “After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could count, from every nation and all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, and palm branches were in their hands; 10 and they cry out with a loud voice, saying, “Salvation to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.”  Yes, one day, because of our prayers, giving, going, and sending knees from every nation tongue and tribe will gladly bow before the King of kings.  One day, because of our praying, giving, going, and sending tongues from every nation, tongue and tribe will confess Him as Lord of all lords.  We can have a part in this great kingdom plan.

Please be aware that the newsletters will not be sent out next week due to Christmas.  We will resume our prayer focus and devotions in the new year!  Merry Christmas.
