Today's Devotional Thought

1 John 2:7-11
In with the Old and Out with the New Part 2

As we began to see last week, John is making sure that they understand that he is not writing a new gospel or a new commandment to them.    He writes in verse 7, “Beloved, I am not writing a new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning; the old commandment is the word which you have heard.”

John is not forming a new religion.  He is preaching the same message, the same commandment that they have always been given!  I hope we saw this clearly last week.  This message of the gospel is what you heard when you first came to Christ.  This is what has been preached since the prophets as we saw in Isaiah 53.  This message has been preached since the very beginning as we saw in Genesis 3.  And as Ephesians 1 made clear, this has been the message and plan of God since eternity past.

If we understand this Old Commandment, it will produce obedience to the new commandment.  We could say, “In with the old, and out with the new!”  As the old commandment takes root, it will bear fruit; and that fruit brings about obedience to a new command.  What is this new commandment?  We receive some clues in verses 8-11:  “On the other hand, I am writing a new commandment to you, which is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true Light is already shining. 9The one who says he is in the Light and yet hates his brother is in the darkness until now. 10The one who loves his brother abides in the Light and there is no cause for stumbling in him. 11But the one who hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going because the darkness has blinded his eyes.”

The new commandment literally means something fresh, not found exactly like this before.  This new commandment is true in Him AND in you because you are being sanctified as the darkness is passing away in your life and the true light is shines.  It is like a spiritual sunrise is happening in you as the old commandment takes root.  And as the old commandment comes IN, the new commandment, fresh commandment will come OUT.  In with the old and out with the new!

What is this new, fresh commandment?  It is the working out of the gospel…the old commandment. What does such a life look like?  Let’s take some time to see, from verses 8-11, what that life does NOT look like first.  We will take some time to consider those who hate tomorrow.  Stay tuned!
